Is Goodwill a business or a charity?
We're both. We run our donated goods retail business in order to support our programs and services and yet are classified as a charity-a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 tax-exempt organization. Our ability to provide programs and services is dependent upon our operating as a well-run business, in addition to being a not-for-profit organization.
Do you charge for your services or get financial help from United Way or the Government?
No. The people who use Goodwill's programs and services pay nothing. We have applied for and are awarded grants by government agencies, but we do not receive regular government funding nor do we receive United Way funding.
Why do you have a Foundation?
The Goodwill Foundation was formed in 1999 because the need in our area for Goodwill programs and services is so much greater than our retail operations can fund. We need the sustained efforts of our Foundation to attract philanthropic dollars-in the form of cash, stocks and bonds, charitable estate bequests and trusts, real estate, and other planned gifts--both to fund current services and to build an endowment that guarantees future Goodwill services.
Do all of the financial contributions you receive stay in our local area?
Yes, contributions made to the Goodwill Foundation support programs and services provided by Goodwill Industries Manasota, Inc. in our service area (Manatee, Sarasota, Hardee and DeSoto counties).
Why do some of your buildings have names?
Some of our buildings are named in recognition of individuals or families who have been major financial supporters of Goodwill. Their names on our buildings are their legacy of commitment to our Goodwill mission and our community.
Why should I support Goodwill financially when there are so many other worthwhile charities around also in need of my help?
Goodwill has a 100-year tradition of providing effective job training and placement services to the disabled and disadvantaged. Goodwill has an enviable reputation as being a charity you can trust and is consistently rated one of the most cost effective charitable organizations by national business magazines. We are good stewards of your philanthropy since 90% of revenues go directly to fund services and programs. While there are many worthwhile causes around, Goodwill's philosophy is different: we believe it is important to teach people to fish instead of just handing out fishes, and we hope you will help us in our efforts.
I give my old clothing and used household items to Goodwill, why should I give money in addition to that?
First, thank you for your donated goods. Without your donations, we would not be able to help as many people as we do. Unfortunately, Goodwill has not been able to serve everyone in need due to limited financial resources. Your financial support will allow us to expand our programs and serve ALL those in need in our area.
